THE McCheyne READING PLAN

Arranged by Robert Murry McCheyene
in Dundee, Scotland, 1842

Jesus prayed "Sanctify them through Thy truth; Thy word is truth."
   -- John 17:17

The apostle Paul wrote "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness; that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works."
   -- 2 Tim. 3:16, 17

If you follow this calendar, McCheyne said that "the entire Bible will be read through in an orderly manner in the course of a year -- the Old Testament once, the New Testament and Psalms twice.  I fear many of you never read the whole Bible; and yet it is all equally divine . . . if we pass over some parts of Scripture, we shall be incomplete Christians."

[These words and the bible reading calendar were published in 1844 by Andrew A. Bonar in Memoir and Remains of the Reverend Robert Murray McCheyne.]

THE VICTORY READING PLAN

Plan characteristics:

1. You read a Psalm or a Proverb each day.

2. You read the gospels twice.

3. You read the Old Testament in chronological sequence.

You read a Psalm or a chapter of Proverbs every day, which brings a refreshment to your daily Bible reading.

In this plan, you go through the four gospels twice during the year, but not one after the other, as in most Bible reading plans. For example, you read Matthew, then Acts, Mark, then Romans, Luke, then 1 and 2 Corinthians and so forth.

You read the Old Testament, not in the sequence that the books are found in the Bible, but in the sequence in which the events occurred. For example, Daniel and Ezekiel wrote during the Babylonian captivity, and Ezra came back from that captivity to rebuild the temple.  You will find that the Old Testament will come alive, as these books are placed in their proper chronological sequence. Try it-you'll love it.
